The Rolling Stones Celebrate 50 Years

It was fifty years ago today, oh wait, that was that other band, The Quarrymen. Never mind.

Start It Up: the 50th Anniversary of the Rolling Stones first gig. Great video in color, possibly in Stereophonic Sound, too.

It should be noted that they gained popularity by playing American songs, as did many of the British Invasion groups of the era. They named themselves after a tune by Muddy Waters called Rollin' Stone  (aka Catfish Blues). Naturally, this would pass as the lads started penning their own material.

The British Blues Invasion, which came just a couple of years later, introduced American blues to the new generation of baby-boomers over here.
